The press celebrates the Republic: memories in struggle on 15 November 1890

Translated from the original.

On this November 15, I would like to highlight the important role of republican institutions and, above all, of the press, in the consolidation of the Republic in Brazil. On the importance of a collective mindset and the consolidation of republican memories, I bring up the article by Carla Siqueira, written as early as 1994.

The beginning of the Republic in Brazil, inaugurated on 15 November 1889, was marked by the pedagogical effort of the ruling groups, who sought to legitimize their power by reforming the “collective mentality” on the basis of new values. In this respect, the regime’s first anniversary played an important role: inventing republican traditions. This article seeks to understand how the 1890 celebration was inscribed in the discourse of the press and to identify its memorialist strategies through their rules and paradoxes. The author considers the press discourse as the “site of memory” of a dispute (republicans versus monarchists), but also as a textual setting over which semantic material is distributed and where a certain number of rhetorical operations are carried out, which allows us to relativize the difference between republicans and monarchists and to highlight certain “forms” and “meanings” that make the press discourse “specific.”
